Gaia Hotel & Reserve

GAIA’s Private Nature Reserve

The hotel is located in a vast haven of lowland forests in which proliferates a remarkable biodiversity of wildlife. Originally the Gaia Garden (“Jardín GAIA”) was a center for the conservation and rehabilitation of local species and orchids. During the building of the hotel in 2005, the majority of the property was maintained untouched and remains until today available as a haven for local wildlife. This is where our guests can explore the flora and fauna Costa Rica has to offer on our daily guided tour. (Offered daily except on Mondays). The tour also includes a visit of the reintroduction program of the Scarlet Macaw which GAIA proudly hosts. Gaia´s Private Nature Reserve is Costa Rica in its most pristine state. It is where many different species have a secure future thanks to the initiative of GAIA Hotel & Reserve to preserve this natural reserve for future generations to come and to reduce the ecological footprint.

With respect to the vision of Social Responsibility that prevails in Gaia Hotel & Reserve, the administration and the owners have defined a strategy of commercial projection through a model of Local Economic Development for the District of Aguirre.

This strategy is based on the characteristics of the community: its culture, as well as the problems that affect it, taking into consideration that it is a coastal region where the tourism sector has grown rapidly thanks to the natural beauty of the surroundings.

It is worth mentioning that the Local Economic Development Model has been designed so that other organizations can be part of this dynamic, so its central focus is the integration of civil society in an organized and legitimate way.

Scarlet Macaw Program

By working with the Costa Rican Ministry of Ecology, Gaia Hotel & Reserve built an incredible cage in their 10-acre private nature reserve to house our new guests, described as “the best cage we have seen in this country” by Adrian Arce Arias (SINAC, The National System of Conservation Areas for the National Parks of Costa Rica) and Pablo Millán veterinarian and supervisor of the Lapas Project of Coopesilencio; a farming Cooperative dedicated to the preservation of the wildlife of Costa Rica. All effort has only one objective, to re-incorporate the Scarlet Macaw into the Manuel Antonio National Park area, freeing the birds when they are ready to survive on their own in freedom and restore this beautiful species in our area.
